In December 1944 the Ardennes
Offensive (known to Americans as the Battle of the Bulge) in which Joseph
Begin participated. The Battle of the Bulge lasted from December 16, 1944
to January 25, 1945 it was the largest land battle of World War II. More than
a million men fought in this battle Joseph Begin served under George Patton's Third Army with The 180th
Engineer Battalion (Heavy Ponton) one of approximately 2000 units that participated
in the Bulge and received credit for the Battle of the Ardennes. The German
military force consisted of two Armies with ten corps (equal to 29 divisions).
While the American military force consisted of a total of three armies with
six corps (equal to 31 divisions).
